Frequently asked questions

What is pre-prosthetic surgery, and why is it needed?

Pre-prosthetic surgery is a procedure designed to prepare your mouth for dentures or dental implants by addressing issues such as bone loss, excess gum tissue, or irregularities in the jaw. It helps ensure that your dentures or implants will fit comfortably and function properly.

What can I expect during pre-prosthetic surgery?

During pre-prosthetic surgery, Dr. Bui may reshape the jawbone, remove excess gum tissue, or address other oral conditions to create a stable foundation for your prosthetic. The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia, ensuring you are comfortable throughout. In some cases, sedation may be used for a more relaxed experience.

How long is the recovery time after pre-prosthetic surgery?

Recovery time can vary depending on the extent of the surgery, but most patients can expect some swelling and mild discomfort for a few days to a week. Dr. Bui will provide detailed aftercare instructions to help manage your recovery, and follow-up visits will be scheduled to ensure proper healing before moving forward with your dentures or implants.

Pre-prothetic surgery before dental implants

Pre-prosthetic surgery before dental implants is an essential step to ensure that your jawbone and gums are in optimal condition for implant placement. If your jawbone has experienced bone loss due to tooth extraction or other factors, Dr. Bui may perform procedures such as bone grafting, ridge augmentation, or gum contouring to create a stable foundation for the implants. This surgery helps improve the alignment and structure of your oral tissues, making it easier to place the dental implants securely. Pre-prosthetic surgery is tailored to your individual needs, and Dr. Bui will work closely with you to ensure a smooth recovery, setting the stage for a successful implant procedure and a long-lasting, functional smile.

Abstract Linear Background

The preparation of your mouth before the placement of a prosthesis (denture) is referred to as pre-prosthetic surgery.

Some patients require minor oral surgical procedures before receiving a partial or complete denture, in order to ensure the maximum level of comfort. A denture sits on the bone ridge, so it is very important that the bone is in the proper shape and size. If a tooth needs to be extracted, the underlying bone might be left sharp and uneven. For the best fit of a denture, the bone might need to be smoothed out or reshaped. Occasionally, excess bone would need to be removed prior to denture insertion. Some patients have an excess bone in the upper jaw on the roof of the mouth called a palatal torus. Others have lumps of bone on the inner aspect of the lower jaw known as lingual tori. These prominent bony protuberances are benign but can cause pain or inability to wear dentures. They are removed in an office procedure.

One or more of the following procedures might need to be performed in order to prepare your mouth for a denture:

-Bone smoothing and reshaping -Removal of excess bone -Bone ridge reduction -Removal of excess gum tissue -Removal of impacted teeth or retained roots We will review your particular needs with you during your appointment.
